About
Koi Clear Water Treatment — A Natural Probiotic for Clear Water and Healthy Fish
Running any business that depends on livestock carries risk — and when that livestock is fish, the risk is harder to manage than most. Fish stock is a business’s most valuable asset, yet it’s one of the few areas where the insurance market offers very little cover. Traditional risk transfer isn’t really an option, which makes active risk management essential.
At Environmental Enzymes, we combine environmental protection with real business protection: proactive, natural treatment that reduces the risk of the single biggest threat to fish stock: algae blooms and the fish kills that follow them.

Causes & Risks of Algae Blooms
What causes algae blooms
Algae need light, warmth and nutrients to bloom. These conditions usually come together when:
-
Excess nutrients (mainly phosphates and nitrates) enter the water from agricultural fertiliser and slurry runoff, sewage or septic leaks, and urban stormwater.
-
Water temperatures rise (most blooms occur in late spring and summer).
-
Water is still or slow-moving, allowing algae to accumulate.
-
Daylight hours are long, boosting photosynthesis.
Blooms are becoming more common in the UK and across Europe, driven by warmer summers, increased nutrient runoff, and lower river flows during dry periods.
Why algae blooms are so dangerous to fish stock
-
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), the most common and concerning type, can produce toxins that harm or kill fish, wildlife, livestock, pets, and pose a risk to human health.
-
As algae die and decompose, oxygen levels in the water drop sharply — this is what actually causes most fish kills.
-
Blooms block sunlight, damaging aquatic plants, and can make water unsafe for fishing or swimming.
-
A bloom can last from a few days to several weeks, and will recur year after year if nutrient levels aren’t brought under control
How Activ-Phos works
Activ-Phos contains an active natural mineral, Lanthanum, which selectively binds with phosphate () and locks it up permanently as a harmless mineral — meaning algae can no longer use it as fuel for a bloom. Treatment is fully active within 3–5 days and reduces by up to 95%, helping you avoid costly fish mortality before it happens.
How Activ-Nitr8 works
Activ-Nitr8 directly reduces ammonia () levels in the water. Ammonia is genuinely dangerous to fish stock at low concentrations: at just 2 PPM, fish deaths will occur; at 4 PPM, an entire stock can be lost. Activ-Nitr8 reduces ammonia levels by up to 98% following treatment.
How this happens
Common nutrient sources — ammonia, nitrogen and phosphorus — are rapidly digested by the microbes in Activ-Nitr8 and Activ-Phos and converted into harmless nitrogen gas. This is a natural process; our products simply accelerate it.
Manage the cause, not the symptoms
Active management is essential. Frequent water quality testing lets you reduce nutrient levels before they can feed a bloom — waiting until dead fish appear means the opportunity has already been missed, and at that point no amount of treatment will undo the damage.
Application
Both Activ-Nitr8 and Activ-Phos are highly concentrated: as a general guide, 1kg of product treats 1 million litres of water, though the exact rate depends on the nutrient levels already present — higher nutrient levels require more product.
Application is simple and can be carried out by one person:
- Add the product to water.
- Leave for 20 minutes to activate.
- Apply evenly across the pond or lake from a small boat.
Results typically begin within 24 hours of application.
